May’s Script of the Month, as selected by the WGC Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) Committee, is Sex Negative—a half-hour comedy series written by Aidan O'Loughlin.
Aidan is a gay, award-winning comedian and comedy television writer. His stand-up has been featured on OutTV and JFL. He’s worked on Canadian Screen Award Nominated shows like CBC’s Workin’ Moms and Crave’s Bria Mack Gets a Life. He is known for telling edgy, funny and deeply relatable stories and currently lives in Toronto. Aidan is a Leo… obviously.
“Aidan's script had me at the title. A gay office comedy set in a Health Clinic called "Sex Negative?" I'm all in! To my greater delight, the clever writing of his script surpassed even the title's,” says WGC member Julian Doucet who worked with Aidan to polish the script. “Working with Aidan I discovered an incredibly nimble comic voice able to move fluidly from raunchy to slapstick, satirical to heartfelt. A true collaborator and diligent worker, Aidan wasn't satisfied until he found the right brand of funny for the moment. An exciting new queer voice to watch!”
“I’m beyond excited that my comedy pilot Sex Negative has been chosen as May’s Script of the Month," says Aidan. "The series is a workplace romantic comedy set at a sexual health clinic downtown. It’s like The Odd Couple meets The Mindy Project… if both those shows were queer. My experience on shows like Workin’ Moms and Bria Mack Gets a Life taught me the importance of story structure, humour and heart. Working with the creators of those shows gave me the opportunity to learn from writers who didn’t see their stories on television and decided to make their own instead of waiting for someone else. That inspired me to do the same with Sex Negative. Funny and authentic stories are the ones I love to tell. I would love to be considered for comedy writers’ rooms and I think my queer perspective and stand-up experience makes me a real asset in the Canadian television industry.”
Congratulations, Aidan!
