The WGC is currently accepting nominations for the 14th-annual WGC Showrunner Award, the Sondra Kelly Award and the Alex Barris Mentorship Award, which will be presented on April 27, 2019, at the WGC Screenwriting Awards ceremony.
The Showrunner Award puts Canada’s best showrunners on centre stage to recognize their role as the true creative force that drives the development and production of television series. (Last year's winner was Emily Andras.)
The Guild is also calling for nominees for the Sondra Kelly Award (2019 winner Jinder Oujla-Chalmers, pictured) and the Alex Barris Mentorship Award. The $5,000 Sondra Kelly prize is open to mid-career female screenwriters looking to research/develop a self-initiated project. Sondra Kelly was a longtime member of the WGC and held the first WGC-designated seat on the Actra Fraternal Benefit Society (AFBS) board.
The bi-annual Alex Barris Mentorship Award recognizes an individual who has made an outstanding commitment to help a writer — or several writers — get ahead in the business. The nominator must be a WGC member, but the recipient could be a teacher, producer or a story editor who stepped out of their traditional job description and did something extraordinary to kickstart a writer's career. The award is named after WGC member, writer, broadcaster, journalist and Canadian television pioneer Alex Barris.
The deadline for entries for all three special awards is FRIDAY, FEB. 28, 2020 at 11:59 pm EST.
