March’s Script of the Month, as selected by the WGC Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) Committee, is Black Black Comedy—a half-hour series written by Jadiel Dowlin.
Jadiel’s journey as a Black Latino Emmy-nominated actor sparked a passion to be a filmmaker of entertaining and enlightening sci-fi horror stories. Playback named him a “Talent to Watch” and The Hollywood Reporter named him a “Rising Star.” He created TV shows supported by the 2022 Corus Entertainment’s YA Scripted Apprentice Program and the Rogers-BSO Development fund. He’s written for Cartoon Network, Amazon Prime, and Netflix, and his directorial debut, the autobiographical documentary The Last Son of Panama, debuted at the 2023 Toronto Black Film Festival.
"Jadiel's script Black Black Comedy is a fresh, funny, futuristic story set against the backdrop of Toronto in 2069,” says WGC member Eric Toth who worked with Jadiel to polish the script. “As the first installment in a satirical sci-fi comedy series, I couldn't be more excited about the limitless potential of a show that will challenge societal norms and take comedic risks along the way. Jadiel is an original, innovative writer with a strong sense of story and character. With this script, Jadiel has proven that his future is very bright."
“I'm elated Black Black Comedy was selected for the Writer's Guild of Canada's Script of the Month!” says Jadiel. “It's the exact type of entertaining and enlightening show I and many BIPOC creatives wish we received a casting call for as actors. I'm most proud of how it balances cautionary social commentary with comedy in a Black Mirror meets Key & Peele type of way. All art should strive to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable. It would be a dream come true to bring it to life on the small screen and write for similar types of shows. Shout out to the Rogers Black Screen Office Development Fund and my mentor Anthony Q Farrell for their instrumental support in developing this series!”
Congratulations, Jadiel!
