May's Script of the Month

Sage

The Script of the Month, as selected by the WGC IDEA Committee, is Vanilla, an original half/hour comedy written by Sage Daniels. Sage, a Two-Spirit Anishinaabe from Winnipeg, is a writer, producer and comedian known for his funny wit and pithy sarcasm. He has worked on short films, including Crash Site, Nosisim, and My Boy, which have been seen around the world. Sage was awarded the Harold Greenberg Fund’s Emerging Talent grant and recently wrote jokes for CTV's Shelved.

“Sage Daniels’s script Vanilla is a charming, funny and poignant underdog tale set in a bakery,” says WGC member Christina Ray who worked with Sage to polish the script. “The protagonist is a young gay Indigenous male struggling to keep his fledgling business afloat while harbouring a secret crush on his business partner, who happens to be his best friend. The characters are distinct and well defined. All of them are flawed, lovable and relatable. This is a show whose gentle humour and open heart provide welcome respite from the cynicism of our polarized world.”

"I am deeply honoured to be selected as the Script of the Month,” says Sage. “I created Vanilla based on my own journey of acceptance and self-love as an Anishinaabe Two-Spirit. Vanilla follows the work-life balance of an erotic baker. Despite its bawdy content, this story is a heart-felt coming of age. It explores what it means to be honest and vulnerable with your partner through the power of cake! I guess you can say this story is ribald for your pleasure."

Congratulations, Sage!
