February’s Script of the Month

Karolyn

February’s Script of the Month, as selected by the WGC IDEA Committee, is Liquid Gold, an original one-hour drama written by Karolyn Carnie.

Karolyn fell in love with the power of television at a young age for its ability to unite families and strangers by showcasing worlds not often visible to the masses. She has her Masters degree from UCLA in Screenwriting and was on the WE FOR SHE WriteHer List in 2019. She has 10 years of previous experience as support staff in writing rooms and on set, and is currently a consulting producer on Season 2 of Paramount Plus and CBC’s SkyMed.

An original one-hour drama, Liquid Gold follows the Kingsroot family, a family that loves each other, and sometimes wants to kill each other. When the patriarch of the biggest family brewery in Canada dies, his daughter, Jessica, is set to inherit the company but is ousted by her brothers, which forces her and the head brewmaster, Lionel, to start their own brewery to go against the juggernaut they helped to create.

“As soon as I started reading Liquid Gold by Karolyn Carnie, I was immediately immersed in the crackling, vibrant world she created,” says WGC member Felicia Brooker, who worked with Karolyn to polish the script. “The script is full of multi-faceted characters, struggling to break free of old family dynamics, which is so very relatable. Set in 1980’s Toronto, as the city is perched on the edge of transformation, it's the best kind of period script — using the past as a foil to the present. Karolyn was also a pleasure to work with and was very open to notes and feedback. Her energy was focused on taking the script to the next level.”

"I am over the moon that Liquid Gold was selected for February's Script of The Month,” says Karolyn. “Working at The Beer Store for seven years made me enamored with these once-family breweries, now juggernauts in the industry. And I love to highlight the female perspective through a lens of will and determination, breaking stereotypical glass ceilings of what female and male characters can do."

Congratulations, Karolyn!
