December’s Script of the Month, as selected by the WGC Diversity Committee, is Nice Jewish Girl, a feature film written by Martina Monro. Martina is a Vancouver-born writer, director, producer and graduate of NYU Tisch School of the Arts. She has previously written for acclaimed Netflix drama You Me Her and has written and directed several short films, including The Tragic Fall of Valerie Mallory Finkerstein now available on CBC Gem.
Nice Jewish Girl focuses on late bloomer Emmy, who's 13 and watching her best friend get inducted into the ring of “developed girls” while her divorced parents battle over her bat mitzvah preparations and the pressure to "transform into woman" mounts.
“Martina’s original and vibrant coming-of-age script straddles the line beautifully and authentically between comedy and drama, being raw and real with surreal elements and style — all while being timeless but very current in its exploration of a young Jewish girl-turned-woman navigating uncertainty, loneliness and confusion in every corner of her life," says WGC member Katrina Saville, who worked with Martina to polish the screenplay. "Martina is an intelligent and intuitive writer and I found our talks and digging deeper into her script, inspiring and collaborative. I believe she’d be great in any writing room.”
"My feature Nice Jewish Girl is the story of a late bloomer who fears God has forgotten to send puberty her way, so she takes matters into her own hands to transform into a woman before her impending Bat Mitzvah," explains Martina. "Packed with awkward humour, bare-faced sincerity and plenty of heart, I think this coming of age dramedy will appeal to anyone who is currently or has previously gone through puberty."
