She was the first writers voice on the Actra Fraternal Benefits Society (AFBS) board (1998-2003), and AFBS is the proud sponsor of this award, providing the monetary prize. Her career as a screenwriter included developing her own projects and advocating for other women writers to do the same. This award reflects Sondras dedication by helping to advance the work of a woman screenwriter who is undertaking a self-initiated project.The WGC is pleased to name Kate Hewlett as 2021s recipient of the Sondra Kelly Award. Her project, Everything is Funny, is a one-hour drama series focused on siblings Erin and Esther, and their aunt Kat, who becomes their guardian when their mother dies. Kat also suffers from bipolar and borderline personality disorders. The show delves into the challenges of being a parent with mental illness and the infallible strength of teen sisters whose world has been turned on its head. Kate is the co-creator of new series in development, Sing Out with AMC. She has also written for many series, including Malory Towers, The Doomsday Brothers and Corner Gas Animated. The Sondra Kelly Award prize will help her research and develop Everything is Funny into a 10-episode, three-season drama. The jurors all loved the passion Kate brought to the project and its subject matter.
