Denis McGrath (1968-2017) was a tireless champion of Canadian screenwriters, something that was noted in 2015 when he was awarded the guild's "Writers' Block Award" (for service to Canadian screenwriters). Denis was a WGC councillor from 2008 to 2017, and a tough negotiator during collective bargaining. He was a sharp, outspoken advocate for screenwriters through social media, and his blog, Dead Things ON Sticks. Denis took on the powers-that-be in the industry, questioning assumptions and challenging ill-informed rhetoric. Denis never gave up a fight.
Denis was also a teacher and a mentor. He served as the executive producer in residence and showrunner mentor for the Prime Time program at the Canadian Film Centre; taught students at Ryerson University, and gave generously of his time to both his peers and screenwriting newcomers.
Denis was an accomplished screenwriter. He was nominated for a Gemini and won a WGC Screenwriting Award for his miniseries, Across the River to Motor City. He was a valued screenwriter in the writers’ rooms of many shows including X Company, Continuum, Bitten, and The Border.
Denis passed away in March of 2017. But we know that his legacy will live on in many ways, and one of those ways is this fund.
Thank you in advance for your support. Please be aware that this fund does not have charitable status and contributions are not tax deductible.
