National Digital Economy Consult

January 26, 2012

Industry Minister Christian Paradis is in the midst of consultations on the National Digital Economy Strategy. He is anticipated to be holding a series of cross-Canada consultations that will continue in the weeks leading up to the release of the 2012 budget. Industry Canada has said Canadians wishing to participate in the discussion can participate in the consultations online. And/or they can participate in person - venues and details will be publicized as the information becomes available. For Canadian audiences in general, and content creators in particular, it is important that the strategy go beyond e-commerce and broadband access to ensure that Canadians can choose quality Canadian programming on all platforms.

We wish them very well and look forward to all three screenwriters having plenty of opportunities to bring their talents to running shows here in Canada. All the best Shelley, Daegan & Dennis - well done.

WGC at Supreme Court on ISPs

January 16, 2012

The WGC appeared at the Supreme Court of Canada today as part of a Creative Coalition. The Canadian creative community and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) were in front of the Supreme Court to contest the issue of whether ISPs should be subject to the Broadcasting Act when they provide their subscribers with access to video programming. At stake is whether the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has the authority to regulate ISPs in a manner that furthers the objectives of the Act. Please see the Coalition press release here.

WGC President in Post

December 23, 2011

A letter to the editor from WGC President Jill Golick was featured in the National Post on December 23rd. The letter was a response to an article published on the 22nd about product placement on television. The article noted the dangers of product placement, stating this should be a lesson to "TV creators." Jill's letter points out that screenwriters/creators rarely have a say in product placement arrangements, and the issue and its potential impact on screenwriting has been on the WGC radar as a concern for years.

Astral Licence Renewal at CRTC

December 8, 2011

The WGC appeared at the CRTC hearing in Montreal looking at French-language broadcaster licence renewals. Of particular interest to the WGC is the renewal of the licences for English-language services owned by Astral Media Inc. (primarily Family Channel and TMN).  Astral has made a number of requests for 'flexibility' that seem to be aimed at reducing the company's contribution to English-language Canadian programming.
