The WGC Podcast: Writers Talking TV

Welcome to the Writers Guild of Canada's podcast page. Our screenwiting-focussed podcasts are recorded at WGC events in front of live audiences and are moderated by WGC members. The podcasts offer an opportunity to learn about the art and craft of screenwriting, as WGC screenwriters discuss their work.

Then browse to the location where you want to save the file and click save. Each file is between 20 MB and 40 MB in size.

Killjoys at Fan Expo - Aug. 31 - Showrunner Adam Barken and writers Julian Doucet, Nikolijne Troubetzkoy, Andrew De Angelis, Julie Puckrin, Vivian Lin, and Derek Robertson came out to meet the show’s fans and talk about how the show gets put together. Jeremy Boxen, who worked on the show in previous seasons, led the lively discussion as panel moderator.

Wishfart - June 28 - Dan Williams, Lienne Sawatsky and John Hazlett, the creators of the animated series Wishfart, chat with host Mike Kiss (Fangbone!, Grojband, Max & Shred) about writing animation, followed by a lively audience Q&A.

The Detail - March 20 - Ley Lukins and Adam Pettle, co-showrunners of The Detail, talk with host Bruce Smith (19-2) about the challenges of the character-driven police procedural, among other writing craft issues. 

Hard Rock Medical - Feb. 1, 2018 - Smith Corindia, co-creator and co-showrunner, talks with host Patrick Tarr.  Hard Rock Medical is a family drama focusing on eight medical students coping with the medical challenges in northern Canada.

Travelers  - Nov. 18, 2017 – Brad Wright, creator and showrunner, in conversation with Sarah Dodd. Travelers is about FBI Special Agent Grant MacLaren (Eric McCormack) and his team of time-travelling specialists, who attempt to navigate their 21st century lives while tasked with the mission of saving the future from a dystopian existence.

Frankie Drake Mysteries - Nov. 21, 2017 - Carol Hay, co-creator, and Cal Coons, showrunner, talk with host James Hurst about the new CBC show about a fictional female detective in 1920s Toronto as she takes on cases the police don’t want — or can’t handle. 

Kim's Convenience - Oct. 10, 2017 - Showrunners Ins Choi and Kevin White talk with host Jeff Biederman about Kim's Convenience, the story of The Kims, a Korean-Canadian family running a convenience store in downtown Toronto. 

Bellevue - June 15, 2017 - Jane Maggs, co-showrunner, in conversation with screenwriter James Hurst about Bellevue, a mystery set in a small town, starring Anna Paquin as Detective Annie Ryder.

Pure - Feb. 9, 2017 - Michael Amo, showrunner of Pure, talks with host Cal Coons about the years-long process of getting Pure, a story about the "Mennonite mob," to air.

Cardinal - Nov. 22, 2016 - Aubrey Nealon, showrunner of the upcoming series Cardinal, talks to host Carol Hay about writing mysteries, and in particular mysteries set in Canada's snowy north.

Wynonna Earp - Sept. 29, 2016 - Emily Andras, showrunner of Wynonna Earp, talks to host Nicole Demerse about showrunning, what goes on in the writers' room, women in TV, genre, and much more.

Slasher - May 25, 2016 - Aaron Martin, showrunner of the series Slasher, talks to host Cal Coons about the challenges of writing in the horror/mystery genre.

This Life - Nov. 17, 2015 - Joseph Kay, showrunner of This Life, is interviewed by Cal Coons about creating a brand new English language show based on the concept of an already existing French language program.

Young Drunk Punk - Sept. 24, 2015 - Young Drunk Punk creator Bruce McCulloch (of Kids in the Hall fame) is interviewed by Matt Watts.

Fan Expo – Sept. 6 – Writing Kids TV, A Bold New World of Opportunities – Moderator Ben Joseph with writers Amy Benham, Nicole Demerse, Doug Hadders, and Kyle Muir.

Fan Expo – Sept. 5 – Dance-Driven Drama, Writing The Next Step – Moderator Jason Leaver with writer-producers Chloe van Keeken and Rachael Schaefer, and cast member Jordan Clark.

The Next Step – June 30, 2015 – Host Nicole Demerse talks with showrunner Frank van Keeken about his approach to The Next Step, a show for young people based on the lives of a group of dancers at the fictional Next Step Dance Studio.

Sunnyside - March 12, 2015 - Sunnyside co-showrunner Gary Pearson, and head writer, Jan Caruana, talk about writing sketch comedy for TV. Writer Simon Racioppa hosted the event.

X Company - Feb. 9, 2015 - X Company's showrunners Stephanie Morgenstern and Mark Ellis talk about the WW Two spy thriller with host James Hurst. The audience was treated to a sneak preview of the show before its premiere on CBC TV. 

Mohawk Girls - Jan. 27, 2015 - Mohawk Girls' showrunner Cynthia Knight is interviewed by Leila Basen, in Montreal. Mohawk Girls is a comedy (sometimes referred to as "Sex and the City...on the Rez,") about the lives of four twenty-something Mohawk women.

Strange Empire - Nov. 20, 2014 - The WGC's WTTV at the second annual Canadian International TV Festival (CITF) with creator and showrunner Laurie Finstad Knizhnik interviewed by Denis McGrath.

Writers Talking Feature Film, The F Word – Sept. 30, 2014  The WGC's inaugeral Writers Talking Feature Film event, with Elan Mastai, writer of The F Word, interviewed by Michael McGowan, writer of Still Mine.

The Writers’ Room and Fan Power – Aug. 30, 2014 Showrunners Tassie Cameron (Rookie Blue), Graeme Manson (Orphan Black), Daegan Fryklind (Bitten), with moderator James Hurst, talk about social media and fans, at Fan Expo Canada.
