Letter to Writers from WGC President Jill Golick

November 21, 2017

Dear Writers,
Let me begin by acknowledging a fact that is no surprise to most women I know: There is sexual harassment in the Canadian film and television industry.
The Writers Guild of Canada takes the matter seriously. At this time, the Guild has not received any complaints. Again, no surprise. Victims have had few incentives to come forward. We hope the climate is changing and writers who have suffered sexual harassment will begin to come forward without fear of retaliation. To prepare for this, the WGC Council will discuss this issue at our meeting in early December. I am available to any member who would like to discuss this issue prior to the council meeting. I welcome your input. Contact me at
The WGC is also collaborating with a pan-industry coalition to develop best workplace practices. For ideas on creating safer workplaces, please see the guidelines from Women in View, which are attached here.
Furthermore, if we are serious about ending this injustice, a radical cultural shift is needed. We as writers can contribute to that change – in our scripts, in the productions we make from them, and in the way we staff those productions.
We have to listen, too. Abuse and inequality thrive in a world where some voices are not heard. Over the last days and weeks we have witnessed the power of women telling their stories. We have to make space for a diversity of voices on our screens and in our feeds, in our entertainment budgets, and in our story rooms, for writers who are Black, Indigenous, and people of colour, for members of the LGBTQ+ community, people with disabilities, and, yes, for women.
Let’s make the world a better place one story at a time.
