Harold Greenberg Fund Cuts

September 15, 2017

The Harold Greenberg Fund has played a significant part in helping to get Canadian films made, including features written by WGC members (Maudie and Meditation Park, among many others). The HGF has also helped fund Canadian TV shows such as Alias Grace and Book of Negroes, originally intended as features, to cite two examples.
But recently Bell Media decided to cut monies going to the HGF. As a result the fund has chosen to redirect its remaining funds to its development program, completely eliminating its equity investment program. The decision is effective immediately, backdated to Sept 1, 2017.
Since its inception in the 1980s, the HGF has spent $65,233,992 in the English-language program on 2,494 script development projects, 230 feature films, 17 family TV series, three feature-length documentaries, 16 short films, and 345 training grants.
The WGC is strongly against these cuts, and is very concerned as to why Bell Media chose to cut such a meaningful and historic funding program.
