Information for Digital Writers

Why is the WGC interested in Digital Projects?

All fictional drama (all genres), documentary, variety, and children’s scripts written with the intent of being the basis of an audio-visual production are covered by the IPA, no matter the distribution platform.

The internet is quickly becoming a content-creator-focused medium. It provides a space where writers and creators can helm their own productions without the middleman of broadcasters and production houses. Work going on in the digital sphere is vibrant, fresh, and attracting audiences all over the world.

The digital sphere is evolving daily, with business models growing organically out of collaborations and creativity - digital is the future. The WGC represents all genres of screenwriting, and we want to be right there with you on the cutting edge. Instead of playing catch-up with our policies and contracts, the WGC is evolving with you, to make sure that all the screenwriting you do is compensated fairly.

But the WGC isn’t just about contracts; knowing about your digital projects means that when we work with other unions, guilds, artists and government groups means that we can lobby and advocate for policies that are of benefit to digital writers. We are working hard to create an industry that supports you and your work.

Be it original, convergent, or based on a pre-existing property, digital projects are an important and vital element of the entertainment industry in the Web 2.0 world. The WGC believes that the writers and creators are equally vital, and we want to do all we can to ensure that you and your team have a safety net in us to fall back on.

It’s important to remember that WGC members must have IPA contracts for their digital writing work, and may only sign with producers who adhere to the IPA, just as they do for any other writing for the screen. Producers need not be members of the CMPA to choose to adhere to the IPA, and can do so as individuals or as single-purpose production companies.
